2024 brings cool changes for the well-liked Wrangler. It sports a fresh look with a new grille and no less than 10 new wheel designs. Inside, there's a big 12.3-inch screen for all your tech needs. This replaces the smaller 5.0- and 7.0-inch screens from the older Wranglers.

The plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain is now available in Sport and Rubicon X models. These hybrid models also come with a new 3.6-kilowatt extra battery for powering gadgets.

Driving Range, Power Sources, and Battery Endurance

If the prospect of navigating off-road landscapes using solely electric power piques your interest, the 4xe powertrain emerges as a compelling option. The 17.0-kWh battery pack boasts a potential electric-only range of up to 25 miles. According to Jeep, this suffices for several hours of low-speed off-road adventuring. When the battery depletes, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine seamlessly takes over, powering all four wheels as a standard Wrangler would, thus eliminating any worry of being left stranded without power.

Fuel Efficiency and Actual Mileage

In a category notorious for heavy fuel consumption, a little goes a long way to lead the pack. The Wrangler's EPA fuel-efficiency ratings position it favourably against competitors such as the Bronco and the 4Runner. The four-door Wrangler Sahara, equipped with a V-6 engine, achieved 20 mpg during our 75-mph highway fuel-efficiency evaluation, falling short of its EPA highway rating by 3 mpg. Conversely, the turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid model outperformed expectations, delivering a commendable 26 mpg, 2 mpg beyond its projected figure.

The Engines

You can choose from five different powertrains for the Wrangler, starting with a powerful 285-hp 3.6-liter V-6. This can work with a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed automatic. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine is optional, and it works with an electric motor to provide extra power at lower speeds. This powertrain, however, only works with the eight-speed automatic. Other than the standard V-6 and optional four-cylinder hybrid, the Wrangler can also be fitted with a 3.6-liter V-6 with a similar hybrid assist, a 375-hp plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain, or a strong 6.4-liter V-8.

Wranglers are made for off-road adventures, so part-time four-wheel drive is standard. This is controlled by a lever on the center console. In our tests, a basic two-door Wrangler Sport with the V-6 and the six-speed manual transmission sped up to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds. A well-equipped four-door Sahara model with the automatic transmission achieved the same speed in 6.8 seconds. The Sahara with the four-cylinder hybrid powertrain was a bit faster, doing 0 to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. The Rubicon and High Tide models, both with more off-roading gear, were not as fast. Our tests show that the Wrangler JL is much better than the older model, but it still keeps pace with its rivals in some areas. Although its handling is better, it's still more like a truck than today's refined SUVs and pickups. The ride in the four-door model is pretty smooth over bumpy surfaces, but the braking distances varied between our two test vehicles.
