The Jeep Cherokee, not to be confused with the bigger Jeep Grand Cherokee, is a compact sport utility vehicle. The big news this year is that the Cherokee is getting a mid-cycle refresh, meaning there's a minor update that'll affect the exterior look, offer a new engine option, and upgrade the infotainment system. The Cherokee is a good overall SUV, but there's one thing that makes this Jeep stand out from the crowded compact SUV pack: off-roading chops. With a Jeep, would you expect anything else? New Look, New You
Jeep has ditched the three-level headlights for more attractive LED headlights that look like those of the Jeep Grand Cherokee or Compass. The Cherokee doesn't look like it's squinting so hard. And the fog lights have moved down. The taillights have been reshaped, and the license plate has been moved from the bumper to the tailgate. Overall, we're calling the exterior refresh a success. Everything looks cleaner, with fewer eyebrow-raising features.
One More Way to Go
There's a third engine option joining the two that were available last year. This engine is worth the wait. We're talking about the 270-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. That might not sound like a lot of horsepower, but the Jeep Cherokee is light enough to not need too many horses, plus any engine that's turbocharged becomes something of a beast. The 2-liter puts out 295 pound-feet of torque and gets up to 23 city miles and 31 highway miles per gallon.
There's also the base engine: a 2.4-liter inline-4 good for 180 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. Unfortunately, the base engine feels a little anemic to drive, even harnessed to a compact SUV. We recommend going up at least to the final engine option: the 3.2-liter V6 that makes 271 horsepower and 239 pound-feet of torque. This one gets up to 20 city and 29 highway miles per gallon. All of these engines are paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission and any of them can benefit from optional all-wheel drive.
Bigger Screen, More Smartphone
The touch screen display in the cabin grew to 7 inches, with an optional 8.4-inch screen available. The display now has pinch-to-zoom capability for 2020. Even better, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not only available but they're standard features. Now you can use your smartphone hands-free in the Jeep. There are more ways to keep you tech-savvy, as the Cherokee adds two front-cabin USB ports, two 12-volt sockets, and an auxiliary outlet. In back there's a 115-volt socket and two additional USBs. Finally, the audio has been upgraded to a 9-speaker system. You'll enjoy great sound listening to music or on your cell phone.
