2020 Dodge Durango

2020 Dodge Durango

The Dodge Durango's strengths are towing, a spacious cabin with third row, and real off-roading capabilities. Many love its distinctive silhouette. The Durango is a mid-size sport utility vehicle that carries over largely unchanged from the 2018 model year. So in this preview guide, we'll go over the few changes and then show you the things that have made the Durango a favorite for years.

What's New for 2020?

Most of what's changed only affect certain trims. For example, the Durango GT is now available with functional SRT hood, with a center duct flanked by two heat extractors. The Citadel, RT and SRT models are now available with 825-watt, 19-speaker sound system from Harman Kardon. The Citadel model gets standard second-row captain's chairs. An optional tow package has an integrated trailer brake. Finally, all Durangos are now available with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-path detection, while the SRT is available with upgraded Brembo brakes with two-piece rotors.

Tows Like a Truck

Critics often give mid-size SUVs a pass in the towing department, which is why when we do find a vehicle in this class that tows so well, it feels like gravy on top. There's nothing mushy about the Durango's towing capability though. When properly configured, this Dodge SUV can tow up to 8,700 pounds. With numbers like that one, you're looking at towing a few water ski boats, a lightweight towable camping trailers, or a ATVs for four. That's not just one of the best in the Durango's class, that's class-leading. That much towing capability puts the Durango right up there with compact pickup trucks, like the Chevy Colorado. Point of fact, that's better than the Colorado's towing capacity.

Three-Row, Seven-Seater

If you want a two-row Durango, we suggest getting the base model, which seats just five. But for those who have plenty of people to haul, there's the three-row, seven-seater configuration. Like most three-row, mid-size SUVs, we recommend only putting kids in the third row as leg room is at a premium. But, not to worry, the front seats and second row are comfortable and spacious to quiet any noise of complaint. In fact, the Durango has an airy feel and plenty of maneuvering room overall. Seats can be upgraded to leather with heated and ventilated seats in the front and captain's chairs behind.

Off-Roading Like a Boss

There's no doubt that the Durango is a family-oriented SUV, but there's no reason why you can't have a little fun. The ground clearance of 8.1 inches is pretty good for its class. If you really want an off-roader, step up to the R/T, SRT, or Citadel trims. The Durango R/T boasts a 5.7-liter V8 engine, performance steering, dual-range transfer case, and sport suspension. Meanwhile, the SRT trim offers a 6.4-liter V8, performance steering, adaptive suspension, all-wheel drive, performance brakes, limited-slip differential, front sport seats, and second-row captain's chairs. That should be good for a little off-roading family fun.
