Off-Roading: 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Jeep understands off-roading like few manufacturers do. Their almost singular obsession on off-roading has had a few very happy side-effects. Like maintaining a workhorse ethic in Jeeps, even alongside comfortable cabins, abundant tech, and enviable exteriors. Even the most basic Jeep Cherokee comes standard with four-wheel drive and Selec-Terrain system, which boasts five terrain settings for various road conditions. There's also optional four-wheel-drive systems available, like Jeep Active Drive I, Jeep Active Drive II, and Jeep Active Drive Lock. The best of these is the Jeep Active Drive Lock, only available on the Trailhawk trim, is for serious off-roading, featuring a mechanical rear-axle lock and adding Rock mode to the Selec-Terrain system.

By comparison, the Honda CR-V has low clearance and nothing in the way of off-roading capability. The CR-V's optional all-wheel drive might help you out of a slick spot or keep your wheels turning in icy conditions, but the CR-V definitely was not designed with off-roading in mind.

Towing: 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Even the base 2019 Jeep Cherokee can tow up to 2,000 pounds. But, when properly equipped with the 271-horsepower 3.2-liter V6 and Trailer Tow Package, the Cherokee can do up to a whopping 4,500 pounds. With numbers like those, some recreational boats and RVs are in your wheelhouse. But don't expect to do anything near the same in the Honda CR-V. When properly equipped, the most the CR-V can tow is a mere 1,500 pounds, the equivalent of a light trailer.

Interior: Tie

The Jeep Cherokee is slightly bigger than the Honda CR-V on the outside, but they have about the same leg and head room in both front and back, despite on paper the Cherokee having more passenger volume. Both of these SUVs seat five people. Both the Cherokee and CR-V benefit from upscale cabins. The Cherokee has soft-touch surfaces and a console that pulls everything together. The CR-V is equally chic and easy on the eyes. We've spent time looking at both cabins and found them both to be upscale, elegant, and tied together nicely.

We like that there is comfort and class in the cabin of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee, even while this SUV has a powerhouse under the hood, tows as much as some trucks twice its size, and can tackle any trail no matter how muddy or potholed. It's nice to know that you can still get all that, even in a compact SUV.
